Thank You for stopping by to learn more about Oran Community Church.
While we are not a "big" Church, we offer the local community a chance to worship in a community oriented way for each of the families that attend.
Groups are now being organized for Sunday School classes, both in person and on Zoom. Please call us
We are a local Community Church that ministers to our area. We have affiliated with the Upper New York United Methodist Conference for the last 70 years.
We provide Christian Education to all ages. Sunday Schooi and Bible Study classes are provided during the School Year. We are currently organizing classes for the upcoming year and invite all to join us--just give us a call.
Just a note that we do not stop providing assistance to our local families during the "off" season. Our children's Sunday School Class organized a Bottle & Can drive this summer and turned all funds collected to the Food Bank of CNY to provide local and needy families with healthful and nutricious meals. Their efforts raised $565.70 for Food Bank of CNY,s Hunger Relief Mission. Enough funds for 1,697 meals for families in our area--Thank You Oran Sunday School. I think they had a good time doing it , also !!
We provide a smaller, local environment for all to join together in their worship of God.
Oran Community Church has been providing a comfortable and friendly site for all to worship. We have been a part of the community since 1805. We are small enough for each to get to know their neighbors in and around the Hamlet of Oran.
We welcome all as we join together in family worship and fellowship as we all learn to become disciples of Jesus.
As the early pioneers arrived from Connecticut and Massachusetts into what is now the Oran area, a Pleasant Valley Church Society was organized in 1805. Two years later, a frame structure was built in an area adjacent to the present Oran Cemetery up on "the hill". Records show that while building this church, the first frame church building in the Town of Pompey, services were held in various places including the barn located on Dr. Gary Eddy's property,, then owned by the Scovills.
Requirements for membership into the Pleasant Valley Society were few and rather straight-forward. As listed in the early church records, they were:
Belief in a Supreme Being
Live within 4 milea of the Society
Contribute to its support
Sign the By-laws
However, by 1839 it was apparant that a larger, more sturdy meeting place was necessary. Agreement was made with Dennis D Denison to exchange the lot on which the first church stood for a piece of ground down on the "plank road" (Rt. 92).
The new building was completed in 1851. The records indicate that some of the materials from the old church were carried down and used in the new building. However, it appears that the old church was never moved in its entirety to the new location.
The First Friday of the Month Group continues to meet on the first Friday of each month starting in the Fall at Manlius United Methodist Church. Oran and other local churches have joined in to create a friendly, social group for youth grades 6-12. Meetings are on First Fridays from 7-10. Come, join the fun.
Our Sunday Morning Bible Conversation class will start up again this Fall in Oran Fellowship Hall Please consider joining us for an indepth discussion of a book of the Bible We try to glean from the Bible what we can and apply to our everyday lives. A little less formal, but still a chance to worship and learn with our friends and neighbors. Please feel free to join us
